What’s Driving the Surge?
- Sports betting boom: Football led the way, accounting for 75% of all bets, with the UEFA Champions League, Portugal’s Primeira Liga, and the English Premier League as top competitions.
- Online casinos dominate: Casino games generated 57% of total revenue, with slot machines taking 80% of all wagers.
- More players joining the action: Portugal now has 4.7 million registered players, a 15% increase from 2023.
Portuguese authorities cracked down on illegal gambling, blocking 112 unauthorized sites and issuing 41 shutdown notices. Meanwhile, self-exclusions jumped 36%, with 292,400 players opting out to manage their gambling habits.
