GAMSTOP, the UK’s national online gambling self-exclusion service, has reported that over 1% of the adult population—more than 532,000 individuals—have registered to block themselves from online gambling platforms since its launch in April 2018.
The milestone reflects rising public awareness of gambling-related harm and growing demand for protective tools, particularly among young adults. Between July and December 2024, the number of new registrants aged 16 to 24 rose by 31% year-on-year, now representing 24% of all new sign-ups.

To further support long-term recovery, GAMSTOP has introduced a five-year auto-renewal option, ensuring that individuals remain excluded unless they actively choose to return. This responds to concerns that users often resume gambling once initial exclusion periods lapse.

Geographically, self-exclusion rates are highest in northern England, with Hull (1.5%), Teesside, and Sunderland (1.4%) topping the list. Other towns with high exclusion rates include Doncaster and Blackpool.

Fiona Palmer, CEO of GAMSTOP, emphasized the urgency of expanding education for at-risk groups: “The increasing number of under-25s registering reflects a worrying trend. This group needs targeted resources and early intervention.” GAMSTOP remains a free, independent service supported by all UK-licensed online gambling operators. Individuals can register at gamstop.co.uk.
