Alberta nears C$3 billion in iGaming wagers

Published date: 2026-10-27

Edmonton, Canada, October 26, 2026. Alberta's regulated iGaming market generated C$2.89 billion in wagers and C$122.1 million in non-adjusted gross gaming revenue (NAGGR) between July 13 and September 30, 2026, according to the first report published on October 23 by the Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC).

Alberta launches responsible gaming framework ahead of regulated iGaming debut

The province launched its competitive market on July 13, under the iGaming Alberta Act of 2025, initially bringing together 15 operators and 22 authorized platforms. By the end of September, 24 operators were participating as licensing continued to expand. AiGC Chief Executive Officer Dan Keene highlighted the gradual migration toward regulated platforms and stronger consumer protection safeguards compared with offshore operators.

Monthly revenue increased from C$22.2 million in July to C$43.3 million in August and C$56.6 million in September. Active accounts reached 388,585 in September, compared with 226,959 in July, although these figures do not necessarily represent unique users.

In September, online casinos accounted for 75.6% of NAGGR, equivalent to C$42.8 million. Sports and event betting represented 19.5% (C$11.1 million), while live-dealer casinos contributed 4.9% (C$2.8 million).

Kandice Machado

Regulatory oversight falls under Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC), led by Kandice Machado, while AiGC commercially administers the market. Provincial Minister of Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction Dale Nally promoted the legislative framework.

The model allocates 2% of GGR to First Nations and 1% to social responsibility programs. The remaining applicable net revenue is subsequently distributed 80% to operators and 20% to the provincial government.

Institutional leadership includes Sanjeev Kad, Chair of AiGC's Board of Directors, and Larry Spagnolo, Chair of AGLC's Board. Participating brands include BetMGM, FanDuel, DraftKings, and BetRivers. The transition period ended on October 13, while the market continues adding operators under identity verification, self-exclusion, and responsible gambling requirements.
