United States accelerates historic transition toward digital gaming

Published date: 2026-05-18

The U.S. gaming sector closed March 2026 confirming a structural transformation that is now reshaping the future of global gambling: growth is no longer being led primarily by traditional land-based casinos, but by online sports betting, iGaming and regulated digital ecosystems. Gross gaming revenue (GGR) reached approximately USD 7.106 billion, an annual increase of 8.3%, while the first quarter of 2026 has already generated around USD 20.183 billion, setting another record for the American gaming market.

The main catalyst behind the surge was the NCAA basketball tournament, March Madness. Although total betting handle declined from approximately USD 13.6 billion to USD 12.6 billion, sportsbook operational profits jumped from USD 851.7 million to roughly USD 1.1 billion, pushing the national hold percentage from 6.4% to 9.4%, one of the highest levels in recent years. Operational efficiency and player monetization have become the real profitability engine for operators such as DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM and Caesars.

Online gaming continues to be the most explosive segment of the market. iGaming revenue rose 16.3% to approximately USD 970.6 million, while sports betting revenue climbed another 16.3% to USD 1.191 billion. Combined, online betting and iGaming now represent nearly 30% of total U.S. gaming revenue, confirming that the industry is moving decisively toward omnichannel and digital-first models.

The fastest-growing states were Kansas (+64.2%), Nebraska (+39.4%), Michigan (+17.7%), Virginia (+16%) and Nevada (+11.7%). Michigan strengthened its position as the most aggressive online gaming ecosystem in the country outside New Jersey, generating approximately USD 322 million in iGaming revenue during March alone. New York continues dominating sports betting with nearly USD 217.2 million in sports betting revenue and more than USD 2.328 billion in monthly handle.

Meanwhile, Nevada continues leading as the global capital of land-based casino gaming. The state generated approximately USD 1.426 billion in gaming revenue, driven by VIP baccarat, premium slot machines, conventions and international tourism. The Las Vegas Strip alone produced around USD 779.9 million, while slot machine revenue exceeded USD 969 million.

The regulatory environment is also beginning to tighten. States such as Colorado are already moving forward with advertising restrictions, promotional limitations and deposit-control measures. The next phase for the U.S. gaming market points toward stronger AML oversight, broader iGaming expansion, higher sportsbook taxation and tougher responsible gambling and advertising controls as digital gambling continues absorbing market share from traditional retail casinos.
