Who was Sheldon Adelson, the casino mogul

Published date: 2021-01-14
Who was Sheldon Adelson

Born on August 4, 1933, in Boston, Sheldon Gary Anderson grew up in the Dorchester district of the same city in the northeastern United States. His father, of Ukrainian and Lithuanian Jewish origin, was a taxi driver. His mother, who owned a weaving shop, had immigrated from England.

The founder of the group Las Vegas Sands, Sheldon Adelson, passed away the night of Monday 11 to Tuesday 12 January, at the age of 87, as a result of cancer. He will be buried in Israel, according to a statement released by his company.

The casino mogul, whose group employs 50,000 people, owns two luxury resorts on the Las Vegas Strip, The Venetian and The Palazzo, and casinos in Macau and Singapore. Sheldon was considered the man who revolutionized the world of tourism by creating hotel complexes integrated with casinos, however, it was not until he was 55 years old that this "serial entrepreneur" entered the casino sector, in 1989, with the purchase from the Sands Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas for $ 128 million.

"His impact on the industry will be eternal," the company said in a statement issued the same day.

The casinos of the business group had several unique strategies within the industry, in fact, in a period of just 3 years, Las Vegas Sands, managed to increase their rates by 80%. During 2016, one of the most iconic casinos in Las Vegas, The Venetian, reduced its poker table capacity by 50% to install a “Stadium Blackjack”, an innovation in which the same dealer is able to distribute hands of blackjack to 30 players simultaneously.

On the other hand, during 2014, there were strong rumors about his interest in buying Codere, the Spanish multinational, a negotiation that was not successful due to disagreements between both parties.

Despite being a great innovator within the gambling industry, Adelson was well known for being a great opponent of online casinos due to his vision that positioned him as a leader in the industry. -Resorts.

Making public comments such as “I'm willing to spend whatever it takes to stop gambling online.” In fact, following Adelson's announcement that he would actively fight online gambling, another prominent Las Vegas casino billionaire, Steve Wynn, changed and said that he no longer believed that online gambling represented a good business opportunity for him. But finally, he gave his arm to twist during the last years, especially under the mandate of Trump to whom he invested more than 200 million dollars in his electoral campaign.

A presidency that sought to strongly favor the gambling industry, especially brick-and-mortar casinos, as the president-elect has a great history with casinos in Atlantic City. But in this presidency the great step of the legalization of online gambling was taken in the great majority of states of the North American country.

Adelson's desire for expansion was unstoppable, his business group managed to position casinos in Macau and Singapore, among the most important casinos in these locations. And for much of the last few years he began to work so that Trump would begin to redo business with North Korea, so that he could “open business there,” as he himself put it.

Finally, when the pandemic disrupted daily routines and drastically affected his business, Mr. Adelson insisted that our team members around the world continue to receive full pay and health care benefits even when the buildings in which they worked they were closed. There are countless additional untold stories of his warmth and generosity, efforts for which he never sought recognition or publicity and he would only respond with a smile if asked about them.
