Malta strengthened its position in May 2026 as the leading regulatory and corporate hub for European iGaming after the ruling Labour Party unveiled new initiatives to reinforce the sector while SBC Summit Malta recorded the highest attendance in the event’s history. The convergence between public policy, regulation and international networking is consolidating the island as one of the world’s most strategic centers for online gaming.

The government led by Prime Minister Robert Abela introduced proposals focused on expanding technological infrastructure, attracting specialized talent, strengthening digital innovation and protecting the international competitiveness of Malta’s gaming ecosystem against jurisdictions such as Curaçao, Gibraltar and the United Arab Emirates. The initiative arrives amid Malta’s 2026 electoral cycle while the country continues defending gaming’s economic importance within its financial and technology-driven economy.

SBC Summit Malta 2026, held between April 28 and 30 at the InterContinental Hotel Malta, gathered approximately 6,000 gaming professionals, more than 1,400 companies, 2,000 operators, 1,000 affiliates, over 250 speakers and 75 exhibitors. The event attracted executives from sportsbooks, fintech, artificial intelligence, payments, compliance, affiliate marketing and international regulatory sectors.

The summit’s central discussions focused on European regulation, AML controls, AI-powered gaming, omnichannel betting, crypto gaming, World Cup 2026 betting and potential EU-wide gaming taxation proposals.

Malta is also moving toward new fiscal and regulatory changes scheduled to take effect on October 1, 2026, including updates to VAT gaming frameworks, gaming taxation and AML supervision. Industry analysts believe the combination of legal certainty, technological innovation, international networking and advanced regulation will continue positioning Malta as the operational and financial epicenter of European gaming.
