Macau Casinos Respond Swiftly: Job Fairs Launched as Melco Faces Labor Scrutiny

Published date: 2025-06-20

In response to mounting regulatory pressure and labor unrest, several of Macau’s top casino operators have launched coordinated job fairs to support displaced employees and preserve workforce continuity across the gaming sector.

This week, SJM Resorts, Sands China, and Galaxy Entertainment Group jointly organized hiring events aimed at reassigning more than 4,800 workers affected by the shutdown of 11 satellite casinos announced earlier this month.

Held from June 16 to 18, the job fairs offered positions in guest services, VIP operations, F&B, and facility maintenance—signaling an industry-wide effort to retain trained talent within gaming-related roles. The events drew hundreds of applicants and were seen as a stabilizing move for both the workforce and public perception.

These developments follow an active investigation by Macau’s Labour Affairs Bureau (DSAL) into recent layoffs at Melco Resorts & Entertainment. Employees claim they were dismissed without notice or opportunity for internal reassignment. DSAL has confirmed the inquiry and reaffirmed its commitment to enforce labor protections. Melco, for its part, maintains that all dismissals complied with current legal standards and transparency norms.

Macau’s chief says satellite casino closures won’t dent the economy

This dual-track response—enforcement by regulators and mitigation by concessionaires—illustrates a broader shift in how employment challenges are being handled in Macau’s evolving gaming landscape. With more restructuring expected in the second half of the year, how operators treat their workforce will remain a central issue for regulators, investors, and the public.
