The historic Gran Casino Sardinero, one of the most iconic tourism and entertainment landmarks in northern Spain, has received a crucial lifeline after the Government of Cantabria facilitated a financial operation allowing it to provide the €300,000 guarantee required under regional gaming regulations. The measure, disclosed on June 23, 2026, has reignited debate over the economic, tourism, and cultural role that historic casinos continue to play within regional economies across Spain.

Located in Plaza de Italia, in Santander’s renowned El Sardinero district, the casino was inaugurated in 1916 and designed by architect Eloy Martínez del Valle. For more than a century, it has served as a focal point of Cantabria’s social and tourism life, combining gaming operations with cultural events, entertainment, hospitality, and tourism-related activities.

The operating company is owned 50% by Santander City Council and 50% by the Government of Cantabria, an ownership structure that is highly unusual within the European gaming industry. The guarantee required under regional legislation is intended to ensure compliance with the financial and administrative obligations associated with the casino’s operating license. To secure the guarantee, the company obtained financing through the Cantabrian Finance Institute (ICAF), a public financial institution controlled by the regional government.

The support follows an earlier capital injection approved in 2025, when both public shareholders committed €1 million to strengthen the casino’s financial position and ensure its continuity. The package included €500,000 from Santander City Council and €500,000 from the regional government.

Cantabria President María José Sáenz de Buruaga has supported preserving the venue as part of the region’s broader tourism strategy.

Beyond its historical significance, Gran Casino Sardinero maintains a diversified gaming offering that includes single-zero European roulette, blackjack, poker, Texas Hold’em tournaments, electronic roulette, and gaming machines, alongside restaurants, bars, lounges, private event spaces, and exhibition areas. In 2024, the company awarded a gaming operations contract valued at €1.17 million through 2032, including an annual concession fee of €130,000.

The financial operation demonstrates that, more than a century after opening its doors, Gran Casino Sardinero continues to be viewed by regional authorities as a strategic asset for tourism, entertainment, and economic activity. For supporters of the project, preserving the casino is not simply about maintaining a gaming venue, but protecting one of Cantabria’s most recognizable tourism and cultural institutions.
