Coljuegos, Colombia’s national gaming authority, has taken a significant step toward sustainability with a new program designed to give a second life to confiscated gaming equipment seized during operations against illegal gambling nationwide. The initiative aims to ensure that slot machines, electronic components, and other materials are repaired, recycled, or donated, minimizing waste and reducing the environmental footprint of the gaming sector.
This measure reflects Coljuegos’ institutional commitment to the principles of circular economy and aligns with Colombia’s National Plan for Electronic Waste Management (RAEE), which promotes the responsible reuse of technological resources. According to Coljuegos president Marco Emilio Hincapié, the goal is to transform seized materials into valuable resources for social, educational, and technological projects, ensuring that what was once illegal becomes an opportunity for innovation and community development.
The environmental shift is also echoed within the gaming industry itself. Initiatives such as Mundo Video Verde®, which promote ecological traceability and the reuse of electronic components, share this same vision of sustainability. Both approaches converge on a key principle: the future of regulated entertainment must be technologically advanced and environmentally responsible.
Colombia’s gaming sector is now writing a new chapter — one where legality and sustainability coexist, and where every machine can quite literally have a second life.
