Chile pushes forward landmark bill to regulate online gambling platforms

Published date: 2025-06-23

In a decisive move to bring transparency and order to its digital gaming landscape, Chile is advancing a comprehensive bill that would officially regulate online betting platforms. The legislation, known as Bill No. 14838-03, introduces a licensing framework and oversight mechanisms aimed at curbing illegal gambling activity while channeling funds toward public welfare and sports development.

Introduced by the Ministries of Finance, Economy, Justice, and Health, the bill establishes a regulatory body—the Superintendency of Casinos, Betting, and Gambling—which will be tasked with monitoring compliance and issuing licenses to operators. The framework requires all online gambling companies operating in Chile to obtain local licenses and comply with strict consumer protection standards.

Notably, 2% of gross income from licensed operators will be allocated to support responsible gaming campaigns and Chile’s national sports federations. The bill also mandates traceability of bets and enhanced safeguards for minors and vulnerable users.

$800 million shock: Chile’s booming online betting industry still unregulated

Support for the legislation has grown steadily across the political spectrum, with unanimous approval from the Economic Committee and a strong endorsement from Deputy Jaime Naranjo, who emphasized the urgency of regulating an industry that has operated in legal limbo for years.

If passed by the Senate, the law would bring Chile in line with global gaming regulation standards, providing clear legal ground for international and domestic operators alike. It also marks a shift toward increased accountability in digital markets across Latin America.
