Chilean authorities crack down on illegal casino linked to organized crime in Santiago

Published date: 2025-02-03

13 Arrested in Major Police Raid Amid Growing Concerns Over Illegal Gambling in Chile

Chilean law enforcement has intensified its crackdown on illegal gambling operations with a recent high-profile raid in La Cisterna, a district in the capital city of Santiago. On January 31, the Policía de Investigaciones (PDI) arrested 13 individuals in connection with an underground casino linked to drug trafficking, illegal firearms possession, and money laundering. The operation was carried out in coordination with the Fiscalía Metropolitana Sur and the National Bureau Against Organized Crime.

Authorities executed nine search warrants across multiple locations in the Santiago Metropolitan Region, including a key establishment near Gran Avenida and Avenida Lo Ovalle. Despite being officially shut down in 2024, this venue continued to operate as an illicit casino.

Illegal Gambling and Crime in Chile: A Growing Concern

Illegal gambling in Chile has been closely tied to organized crime, with many unlicensed casinos operating as fronts for money laundering and drug distribution. Unlike regulated casinos in major tourist destinations such as Viña del Mar and Pucón, these underground establishments pose significant security risks. The Chilean government has ramped up efforts to dismantle such operations, particularly in Santiago, where illegal gambling dens have become a hotspot for criminal activity.

Chile, another victim of illegal gambling and casinos

This recent raid follows another major operation five months ago, when Chilean authorities dismantled an interregional criminal network involved in drug trafficking and money laundering. That investigation led to the seizure of 44 million Chilean pesos in cash, narcotics, and firearms, along with the arrest of 20 individuals facing charges of organized crime, drug distribution, and illegal possession of weapons.

The Future of Gambling Regulation in Chile

As part of an ongoing effort to regulate the industry, Chile is debating the expansion of legal online gambling while simultaneously cracking down on illicit operations. The government has proposed new regulations to oversee digital betting platforms and strengthen enforcement against unauthorized gaming businesses.

The latest police operation highlights the ongoing battle between law enforcement and organized crime in Chile’s underground gambling scene. While efforts to combat illegal activities continue, authorities are also working to provide a safer and more transparent gambling environment for consumers.
