Brazil’s betting CPI to present final report amid match-fixing scandal

Published date: 2025-02-11

The Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPI) on the Manipulation of Games and Sports Betting will present its final report today , February 11, 2025, at 3 PM. The highly anticipated session, led by Senator Romário (PL-RJ), will outline the findings of the months-long investigation into match-fixing and sports betting fraud in Brazil. A vote on the report is scheduled for the following day, Wednesday, February 12.

Among the key items on the agenda is Request 178/2025, submitted by Senator Carlos Portinho (PL-RJ). This request seeks updated information from the Federal Police regarding the extradition of William Pereira Rogatto, a businessman known as the "king of relegation," who is accused of orchestrating match-fixing schemes in football.

Rogatto was arrested by Interpol in Dubai in November 2024 and is awaiting transfer to Brazil. Portinho has requested details on the legal process and an estimated timeline for Rogatto’s arrival in Brazil.

Rogatto had previously testified before the CPI in October 2024, denying involvement in fixing matches. However, authorities claim he played a key role in rigging games for betting fraud, influencing team performances to generate massive payouts from international betting platforms.

The CPI’s findings are expected to propose new regulations and enforcement measures aimed at strengthening sports integrity and betting transparency in Brazil. With the sports betting market expanding, the government is under pressure to combat corruption and restore public confidence in Brazilian football.

The report’s presentation could mark a turning point for Brazil’s gaming laws, potentially leading to stricter oversight of betting operators and harsher penalties for match-fixing offenders.
