President Lula (PT) stated this Sunday, 10, that he is in favor of the proposal by senator Jorge Kajuru (PSB-GO) for the federal government, through a decree, to prohibit any and all types of bets related to cards, manual throws, penalties and corners in football matches. According to Senator Kajuru, only bets on the result should be allowed.
The statements by the senator and President Lula were given during the PODK Liberados program, which also included the participation of Senator Leila Barros (PDT-DF). In the conversation with Lula, Kajuru cited the case of Bruno Henrique, from Flamengo.
The attacker is the target of Operation Spot Fixing, and is being investigated by the Federal Police (PF) and the Public Ministry of the Federal District (MPDF). According to PF investigations, the attacker forced a yellow card in the duel against Santos, held in the 2023 Brazilian Championship.
On that occasion, Bruno Henrique received a yellow card and ended up being sent off at the end of the match. The PF assesses that the action was carried out to financially benefit relatives and friends in the sports betting market.
“If a player was induced to receive a yellow card or be sent off, he is wrong. […] We need to moralize this, for the good of humanity and the good of Brazil. I'm not against gambling, I'm in favor of regulated gambling, which is done with as much sincerity as possible”, highlighted Lula.
“That's it, I think correctly. I think it's correct because people can even manipulate the result of the game, but it's much more difficult than manipulating the yellow card where the player, deviously, can provoke the referee to receive the yellow card”, stated the president of Brazil, agreeing with the proposal presented by Senator Kajuru.
“We had a case in Europe, involving a Brazilian player who plays for the Brazilian team. A player who earns a good salary, he didn't need to do that. This proposal of yours is the most decent in the world, you bet on the result and that's it”, concluded Lula, remembering the case involving West Ham midfielder Lucas Paquetá.
