Alberta’s golden gamble: will Canada’s next iGaming boom begin in the prairies?

Published date: 2025-04-21

Alberta is gaining momentum as Canada’s next big opportunity in regulated iGaming, with a legislative proposal that could transform the province into the country’s second major online gambling hub after Ontario. The push to legalize and open Alberta’s iGaming and sports betting markets is capturing national attention—and fueling what many are calling a new digital gold rush.

At the heart of the transformation is Bill 16, introduced by Dale Nally, Alberta’s Minister of Service and Red Tape Reduction. The bill proposes a dramatic shift from the current monopoly controlled by Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC), establishing a competitive licensing framework for private operators under a new independent gaming commission.

Rural Municipalities of Alberta seeks charitable gaming overhaul.

The buzz is undeniable: companies are preparing infrastructure, legal teams are monitoring every move, and industry players are anxiously hoping the bill passes before the end of the spring session. There’s growing belief that Alberta’s strong digital backbone, tech-savvy population, and business-friendly environment could make it even more agile than Ontario, whose market has surpassed $2.3 billion in revenue since 2022.

Everybody praying for Alberta Sports betting approval this year.

For many operators and affiliates, Alberta is no longer just a promising market—it’s a strategic priority. If passed, Bill 16 could establish a modern blueprint for regulated gaming across Canada and beyond.

As the legislative clock ticks, Alberta stands poised to reshape the Canadian gaming map—and potentially lead a new era of iGaming in the western hemisphere.
