Macau extends Macau Slot´s concession until 2027 ahead of World Cup push

Published date: 2026-06-11

The Government of the Macau Special Administrative Region has secured the continuity of its historic sports betting operator ahead of the world’s biggest football event. Under a decision approved by the administration led by Chief Executive Sam Hou Fai, the concession of Sociedade de Lotarias e Apostas Mútuas de Macau, Limitada (Macau Slot) has been extended until June 5, 2027, ensuring the continued operation of regulated instant lotteries and sports betting products focused on football and basketball.

The renewal comes at a strategic moment for the industry. Macau Slot’s previous concession expired on June 5, 2026, forcing authorities to determine the future of one of Macau’s longest-running non-casino gaming segments. The operation remains subject to oversight by the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ), Macau’s gaming regulator.

The decision is particularly significant because Macau Slot has been the territory’s primary sports betting operator for decades. Although the company received a three-year concession renewal in 2021, it lost the exclusive rights it had historically enjoyed over certain betting products. Since then, the government has favored shorter extensions, first until 2026 and now until 2027, leaving open the possibility of a broader review of Macau’s sports betting concession model.

At the same time, the company has launched a commercial initiative linked to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. On June 10, 2026, Macau Slot opened the “Classic Revival: World Football History Exhibition” at H853 Fun Factory inside Lisboeta Macau. Running through July 19, 2026, the exhibition features more than 70 historical football artifacts, including a replica of the iconic FIFA World Cup trophy.

The exhibition was launched with the participation of Macau Slot CEO Stephen Ho, who highlighted the connection between tourism, entertainment and football culture. The initiative aligns with Macau’s broader diversification strategy, which seeks to reduce reliance on traditional casino gaming and expand non-gaming attractions.

By extending Macau Slot’s concession while simultaneously leveraging World Cup-related tourism and entertainment, Macau is reinforcing regulatory stability in the sports betting sector while positioning itself to benefit from one of the largest global sporting events of 2026.
