Curaçao Gives Gaming Providers a Breather With Six-Month License Extension

Published date: 2025-06-26

The Curaçao Gaming Authority (CGA) has granted a six-month extension for provisional gaming licenses under the island’s new National Ordinance for Games of Chance (LOK), easing regulatory pressure on B2C operators and B2B providers alike.

Initially set to expire on June 24, 2025, the provisional licenses now remain valid until December 24, 2025. The CGA clarified that updated documentation must be submitted no later than June 27, and the extension applies only to operators and providers who have already initiated the transition under the new framework.

This move offers crucial breathing room for companies adapting to the LOK’s more rigorous compliance environment. New obligations include enhanced anti-money laundering safeguards, responsible gaming protocols, mandatory dispute resolution mechanisms, and a full transition away from the historical master/sub-license structure.

However, the extension is not automatic nor unconditional. Licensees must show measurable progress toward full regulatory compliance during this period. Those who fail to do so may risk losing both provisional and future licensing status.

Dutch government to enter consultation with Curaçao to ensure gambling supervision is tightened with the aim of combatting money laundering.

The decision reflects the CGA’s pragmatic stance—acknowledging the operational complexity of compliance, while maintaining pressure for reform. The regulator had already faced criticism over delays in the application process and the backlog of approvals. This extension serves both as a buffer and as a firm checkpoint in the modernization process. For gaming suppliers and platform providers, this is a chance to regroup, strategize, and secure their position in a jurisdiction still considered pivotal in the international online gaming ecosystem.
