The Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) has announced that the country’s efforts to regulate online sports betting have led to a 40% reduction in illegal gambling platforms operating in the digital space.
The results follow the implementation of Law No. 31557, passed in 2022, which regulates remote gambling and online sports betting in Peru. According to Mincetur, the crackdown included coordinated efforts to block payment services to unauthorized operators and to shut down 15% of illegal websites active in the country.

Authorities partnered with financial institutions and payment providers to cut off access for unlicensed betting services. These enforcement strategies have significantly disrupted the operations of illegal gambling entities, while also helping to create a safer and more transparent online betting environment.

The law grants the government supervisory powers to monitor the sector, protect consumers, and collect fiscal revenue from licensed operators. Mincetur emphasized that further evaluations are ongoing to ensure long-term regulatory effectiveness.

By enforcing stricter controls and leveraging financial tools, Peru aims to set a precedent in Latin America for curbing the spread of illegal online gaming while promoting legal, regulated alternatives. More updates on the enforcement of Law 31557 and its impact on Peru’s gambling market are expected in the coming months.
