Yesterday, President Iván Duque announced that it will no longer be necessary to wear masks in public spaces. This announcement comes after several local leaders and organizations requested the Executive to withdraw the sanitary measure.
"We are above 81% in the application of one dose, we have already surpassed 65% with double doses and we have surpassed eight million people with booster doses", said Duque.
He added that the guidelines are ready in the Ministry of Health so that municipalities whose vaccination exceeds 70% can lift the use of face masks in public spaces.
According to the Ministry of Health, as of Monday, February 21, 2022, 76.3 million doses of the vaccine against Covid-19 have been applied in Colombia. Included to the reduction of cases and deaths from Covid-19 that has been occurring in the country, after the fourth peak of the pandemic generated by the omicron variant.
"This is a measure that is taken thinking about public health, but also maintaining the guiding principle that we all Colombians have to get vaccinated" said the president.
Mayor Claudia Lopez reported that in Bogota the percentage of vaccinated people over 12 years of age is already 94 percent, so that, from March 1 will begin to govern the relaxation of the use of masks once President Duque modifies the conditions of the health emergency decree.
For his part, Mayor Daniel Quintero informed that as of this Wednesday, the use of face masks in public spaces in Medellin will not be mandatory. "We have overcome the hardest stage of the pandemic," he said.
