Detroit casinos report $98.9 million in September revenue as Michigan regulator applauds new state budget

Published date: 2025-10-09

Detroit, October 2025 — The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) reported that Detroit’s three commercial casinos — MGM Grand Detroit, MotorCity Casino, and Hollywood Casino at Greektown — collectively generated $98.9 million in revenue for September 2025. While slightly below August’s $106.9 million, regulators say the results reflect continued market stability amid broader state fiscal reforms.

Slot machines accounted for $79.8 million (80.7%) of total monthly revenue, while table games contributed $19.1 million (19.3%). Sports betting added a modest $1.2 million, marking a 2.1% month-over-month decline attributed to seasonal fluctuations following the summer tourism peak.

MGM Grand Detroit maintained its dominant market share at 44%, followed by MotorCity with 33% and Hollywood Casino at 23%. The casinos collectively paid $8.0 million in gaming taxes to the State of Michigan and $11.7 million to the City of Detroit, reinforcing the sector’s fiscal importance to local public programs and infrastructure.

In its latest statement, the MGCB praised Michigan’s newly approved Fiscal Year 2026 budget, emphasizing its commitment to “transparency, responsible regulation, and industry modernization.” The updated budget includes expanded funding for anti-money-laundering initiatives, digital oversight, and problem gambling prevention, as well as provisions to strengthen online gaming and tribal-state regulatory cooperation.

MGCB Executive Director Henry Williams said the state’s gaming ecosystem remains “a model of fiscal responsibility and public benefit,” noting that regulated gambling contributed more than $1.3 billion in combined state and municipal revenue during the past year. Analysts at Crain’s Detroit Business view the latest report as a positive signal ahead of Q4, when major sports seasons — including the NFL and NBA — typically boost Detroit’s sports betting handle. With a solid regulatory foundation and balanced fiscal policy, Michigan’s gaming sector continues to show steady resilience and growth.
