Hard Rock Las Vegas and Golden Gate fuel the city’s next gaming and tourism boom

Published date: 2026-06-25

Las Vegas continues to reinforce its position as the world's gaming capital. Three major developments reported in June 2026 highlight how casinos remain powerful drivers of investment, tourism; and events the rapid construction of the new Hard Rock Las Vegas, the city's recognition as the leading convention destination in the United States, and the arrival of the legendary Sigma Derby attraction at the historic Golden Gate Hotel & Casino.

The most significant investment story is the transformation of the former The Mirage, which closed on July 17, 2024, after 34 years of operation. Rising in its place is the new Hard Rock Las Vegas, developed by Hard Rock International, owned by the Seminole Tribe of Florida and led by Chairman Jim Allen. Scheduled to open in the fourth quarter of 2027, the resort will feature a 174,000-square-foot casino, approximately 2,000 slot machines, 212 table games, and nearly 3,700 hotel rooms, including 675 rooms inside the iconic 660-foot-tall Guitar Hotel tower, which will stand 42 stories high. The multi-billion-dollar project is expected to create up to 6,000 jobs, making it one of the largest casino investments currently underway on the Las Vegas Strip.

Casino development is also strengthening Las Vegas' convention business. The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA), led by President and CEO Steve Hill, celebrated the city being ranked the No. 1 conference destination in the United States in the inaugural U.S. News & World Report Best Conference Cities 2026–2027 rankings.

The study evaluated 52 U.S. destinations based on event infrastructure, accessibility, hospitality offerings, and visitor appeal. Key casino-linked convention assets contributing to the ranking include the Las Vegas Convention Center, Caesars Forum, Venetian Expo, and Mandalay Bay Convention Center, reinforcing the role casino resorts play in attracting millions of business travelers annually.

While mega-resorts shape the future, downtown Las Vegas continues to preserve gaming history. The Golden Gate Hotel & Casino, owned by Derek Stevens, became the new home of the legendary Sigma Derby, one of the last operating mechanical horse-racing games in the world.

The attraction completed its final run at The D Las Vegas on June 14, paraded through Fremont Street on June 16, and officially reopened at Golden Gate on June 19, 2026. Stevens described Sigma Derby as “a piece of Las Vegas history,” highlighting how casinos continue to blend nostalgia, entertainment, and gaming innovation to attract visitors from around the world.
