NBA Star Terry Rozier Caught in Betting Scandal? Shocking New Details Emerge

Published date: 2025-02-03

Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier is under federal investigation for allegedly manipulating his performance in a March 2023 game during his tenure with the Charlotte Hornets. The probe centers on unusual betting patterns detected during a matchup against the New Orleans Pelicans, where Rozier exited early due to a foot injury.

In the March 23, 2023, game, Rozier played just over nine minutes before leaving, citing a foot injury. This abrupt departure raised suspicions among bettors and authorities, especially given the significant wagers placed on Rozier underperforming in that game.

The NBA conducted an initial investigation into the incident and found no violations of league rules. However, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York has since initiated its own probe, with which the NBA is cooperating. Rozier has not been charged with any crime, and his attorney, Jim Trusty, stated, "We are aware of the NBA's 2023 investigation which determined there was absolutely no wrongdoing by Mr. Rozier and we are confident that the ongoing government investigation will arrive at the exact same conclusion."

This investigation is part of a broader federal effort to uncover illegal sports betting activities involving professional athletes. Notably, former Toronto Raptors player Jontay Porter received a lifetime ban from the NBA for his involvement in a similar betting scheme. Porter pleaded guilty to charges related to game-fixing and is awaiting sentencing.

NBA 2K League announced the suspension of six people for violating league gambling rules

The rise of legalized sports betting in the United States since 2018 has led to increased scrutiny of athletes' involvement in gambling activities. Several professional athletes across major sports leagues have faced suspensions and penalties for violating betting policies. For instance, NFL player Calvin Ridley was suspended for a year in 2022 for betting on NFL games, and NHL player Shane Pinto received a 44-game suspension in 2023 for violating the league's wagering rules.

Rozier, currently in his 10th NBA season, has declined to comment on the ongoing investigation. When approached by reporters, he stated, "On advice from counsel, I can't answer any questions about that matter."

The outcome of this investigation could have significant implications for Rozier's career. If found guilty of involvement in illegal betting activities, he could face suspension, contract termination, and forfeiture of his remaining salary, which amounts to nearly $50 million.

The Double-Edged Sword of Sports Betting.

This case underscores the ongoing challenges professional sports leagues face in maintaining the integrity of their games amid the expanding landscape of legalized sports betting. As the investigation unfolds, it serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between the lucrative opportunities presented by sports gambling and the potential risks to the credibility of professional sports.
